Cementitious waterproofing is a method of waterproofing that involves the application of cement-based materials to create a protective barrier against water infiltration. It is commonly used in various construction applications, including basements, foundations, retaining walls, and concrete structures.
The cementitious waterproofing system typically consists of a mixture of cement, sand, and additives that enhance its waterproofing properties. These additives may include polymer modifiers, crystalline compounds, or water-repellent agents. The specific composition may vary depending on the manufacturer and product specifications.
The application process starts with surface preparation, which involves cleaning, repairing any cracks or defects, and ensuring a smooth and sound substrate. As the cementitious waterproofing material cures, it forms a hardened and dense layer that effectively blocks water penetration. The chemical reaction between cement and water, known as hydration, leads to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate crystals, which fill the pores and capillaries in the concrete or substrate. This process enhances the material’s resistance to water and makes it impermeable.
